In a announcement of the release of Patch 2.4 for the remaster (read Neil's thoughts on it here), Blizzard has revealed that Resurrected has sold more than 5 million units. This has far exceeded the original's four million sold.

In the case of the 2.4 patch, it's one of the few patches in 11 years that addresses balance issues with Diablo II. "Among the improvements are a variety of modifications for each class brand new Rune Words, fresh Diablo 2 Resurrected Items Cube recipes, Mercenary changes, and more!"
